Who Made Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts Possible?

In 1966 at the age of 71, Catherine Filene Shouse donated the 117 acres as well as the funds to build the Filene Center and we are so glad she did. The land was previously a working farm owned by Catherine, who was a highly decorated public servant. She began acquiring farmland outside of Washington, DC in 1930 to provide a break from the bustle of the city. The land in Vienna was not only a working farm, but more importantly it was a beautiful gathering place for friends and family to enjoy dinners, dances, carnivals, or a simple walk through nature.

Catherine was born into the Filene family; whose wealth came from their Boston department store. Although she was one of the greatest women to serve our country through public service, she was simple and unpretentious. She was a leading activist for women’s rights. She worked alongside every President from Roosevelt to Clinton.
